Research Interests:
Signal transduction and ion transport processes of the neurovascular unit with an emphasis on brain microvascular endothelial cells. Our studies have focused largely on: 1) the role of Na transporters in normal blood-brain barrier function as well as in the pathophysiology of stroke; and 2) the effects of estrogen on blood-brain barrier and astrocyte Na transporters . A variety of experimental methods are employed, including molecular biology, subcellular fractionation, protein biochemistry, cell culture, microvessel isolation, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance of whole animals.
